PUTRAJAYA: After a remarkable 35 years in the public service, with the height being the Customs director-general, Datuk Seri T. Subromaniam (pic) has called it a day.

The man who is widely known as “the face of GST” or “Mr GST” was given a grand ceremonial send-off at the department’s headquarters here yesterday.

His last official day of work is today.

Subromaniam said his proudest achievement as the Customs chief was the successful transition from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime to the current Sales and Service Tax (SST) system.

“But it was made a success without many problems, thanks to the commitment of all the staff in the department as well as the Finance Ministry,” he told reporters at a press conference before his farewell ceremony.

Subromaniam was the GST director and oversaw the implementation of GST in April 2015.

He was appointed Customs director-general on March 24, 2017 following the retirement of Datuk Seri Khazali Ahmad.

After 14th General Election, the Pakatan Harapan government abolished GST and replaced it with SST 2.0.
