KUALA LUMPUR : The public is advised to be cautious when receiving invitations to join or download the 'Pink WhatsApp' application.

The Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in a statement explained, the application supposedly offers better security and privacy features, a customizable interface, as well as the ability to send larger files than the commonly used WhatsApp application.

"However, after installation, the app can access various items in the user's smartphone such as photos, SMS and contact lists, which can lead to serious security risks.

"Users will receive messages and links as if coming from WhatsApp inviting users to try the new application.

"MCMC advises users not to download and install the 'Pink WhatsApp' application, and immediately remove the application if it has been installed on their smartphone," he explained.

MCMC also recommends users to only download mobile apps from official app stores such as Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei AppGallery.

Users are also requested not to distribute any suspicious links.

Users are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to 'Pink WhatsApp' to the MCMC Complaint portal or hotline.
