Offering sex services via WeChat, foreign civil servant among 8 women arrested

GEORGETOWN: A woman who claimed to be a civil servant in a neighboring country is among eight foreign women arrested by the police on suspicion of engaging in prostitution through the WeChat application.
Through the booking made using the application, customers can get sex services with a payment rate between RM150 to RM250.
North East District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong, said the woman's tactics were revealed through seven raids between 6pm and 10pm at several budget hotel premises, boarding houses and apartments around the North East district, last Friday.
"Through the operation, eight foreign women aged 25 to 47 were arrested, including RM2,200 in cash that was confiscated.
"Preliminary investigations found that all those arrested entered the country using social visit passes and they were looking for clients using the WeChat application and charged a sex service fee of between RM150 and RM250," he said in a statement today.
Earlier, reports about the raid went viral on social media claiming that one of the women involved was the wife of a high-ranking civil servant abroad.
Soffian said, the investigation found that one of the arrested women admitted to being a civil servant in a neighboring country.
"The woman claimed to have come to this country to carry out prostitution activities to earn extra income.
"All of them were remanded in accordance with Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code and placed in the Bayan Baru Central Lockup for further action.
The case is investigated in accordance with Section 372B of the Penal Code, Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and regulation 39b of the Immigration Regulations 1959," he said.
