Kim Pan Gon was proud of the action displayed by his players when they beat Kyrgyzstan 4-3 in the opening match of Group D of the 2026 World Cup/2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil on Thursday.
According to him, his players showed a high mentality and did not give up to rise and knock down opponents in a better ranking position.
"I am very proud of Harimau Malaya, they showed a good mentality and thanks also to the supporters.
"Congratulations to all the players. As a coach it was a difficult match, but we managed to win and were able to make the fans happy," he said in a press conference after the match.
In the meantime, he also acknowledged that the match was a lesson, especially when he was two goals behind despite taking the lead as early as the sixth minute.
"We started well, comfortable and confident until we managed to score a goal.
"I don't know maybe in the second half I reminded the players to remember who we are. I like the confidence (when leading by one goal) then falling behind, but don't be too confident or arrogant. We have to respect the 97th ranked team.
"It was a lesson for us. It was an amazing match even though it was a bit difficult," he said.
