 The mayor of Kuala Lumpur warned, there is no tolerance for corruption

KUALA LUMPUR: The Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif will not tolerate corrupt practices at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

Maimunah said that She would not hesitate to take strict action if he found DBKL staff involved in the practice.

She has ordered all executive officers and department heads to help monitor the 9,000 DBKL employees.

"I alone can't monitor all the staff so I ask the superior officers to help provide education in addition to cooperating with the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) as DBKL's partner.

"First of all we educate and provide knowledge followed by enforcement actions.

"We will not hesitate to take action if there is legitimate evidence of corrupt practices among staff," she said at a press conference on the first day of her duties as Kuala Lumpur's 15th mayor.

Maimunah is the first woman to be appointed Datuk Mayor of Kuala Lumpur replacing Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Urban Planning) from the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology, United Kingdom before continuing her studies in a Master of Science (Urban Planning) at Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Previously, she served as the Mayor of the Penang City Council and the President of the Seberang Perai Municipal Council and was the President of the Malaysian Local Authorities Association (MALA).

The 63-year-old woman is also the first Asian woman to hold the position of Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlement Program (UN-Habitat).

Maimunah said that she wanted to make DBKL a local authority (PBT) with high integrity.

Se said, integrity, accountability and transparency are important so that tasks can be carried out efficiently and effectively.

"This is about individual awareness and there needs to be an identity. The first time you are given a handout, don't take it because once you take it, there will be a second, third and so on.

"This is a stern warning from me. DBKL will cooperate with the MACC with officials in taking action if it is proven that the practice exists," she said
