KUALA LUMPUR A chat over a cup of coffee between PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy Datuk Seri Azmin Ali has set tongues wagging over a possible reconciliation between the two leaders.
The two were seen chatting at the Parliament lounge for about 30 minutes during the lunch break, with party secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail joining them later.
This is because this is the first time that Anwar and Azmin have been seen together in public following the heated PKR polls last November.
Anwar later uploaded a photograph on his official Facebook account with the caption, “Having coffee with the deputy president and secretary-general at the Parliament lounge”.
When later asked by reporters what the meeting was about, Anwar merely said that they spoke about national economic matters.
Pressed further if their meeting could be described as a reconciliation meeting, Anwar said no.
“No... it was just a normal meeting to discuss national economic matters, ” he reiterated.
Asked if he had asked Azmin to attend party monthly meetings from now on, Anwar quipped that he didn’t have the time to ask that.
Last month, several PKR leaders believed to be aligned Azmin, including vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin, had demanded a reconciliation meeting with Anwar.
However, in response, both Anwar and Saifuddin had said that there would be no such meeting.
Anwar and Saifuddin had instead called on Azmin and Zuraida to attend the party's political bureau meeting on Wednesdays and monthly leadership council meetings if they wanted to discuss party matters.
Azmin and Zuraida have been absent from these meetings since the party polls last November, citing ministerial work as reasons for their absence.
